Couple / Relationship Therapy
This term is inclusive of any relationship which is considered by both parties to be a partnership, irrespective of sexuality or status.
HOW CAN IT HELP ?
When difficulties arise within a relationship, whatever their cause, it can be very helpful for them to be addressed by both partners together at the same time.
Sometimes the problems may come from outside the relationship such as a change in circumstances, external family pressure, extended family complications, the arrival of a new baby; sometimes they can come from within the partnership, different expectations, different ways of relating to the world and each other, different past experiences and of course sometimes, and frequently, they can be a mixture of both.
HOW CAN WE WORK TOGETHER?
As a couples therapist my role is not to take sides, determine who’s right or wrong or to tell either party what must be done.
Rather, it is about working in collaboration with both partners to help gain insight and understanding into why the relationship may have become broken and damaging and to explore the unhelpful ways of relating to each other which are likely to have been established. In this way our work can open up the possibility and potential of (re)creating healthier ways of being, understanding and communicating together.
Couple therapy can also play an important role in supporting both individuals who have already decided to separate. Working sensitively together to help make difficult practical and emotional decisions can help prevent further distress and damage as well as offer the potential for the building of firmer foundations in relationships to come.
The path and course of couple / relationship therapy will be unique to each partnership. For some, just a few sessions may be helpful, but for others therapy may continue for many weeks or months.
